Born into Hungarian family in Bucharest, Romania, where he lived to age 12. Spent a year in Algeria and two in West Germany before emigrating with family to Montreal, Canada. Studied politics and languages at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario and the University of Glasgow, Scotland, plus a semester studying Spanish in Salamanca, Spain. Volunteered with the Canadian Armed Forces Reserves, where he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Studied law at McGill University, Montreal and worked with law firms there, then moved, in 1992, to London, UK.

Teaches business law courses to university students and works with a law firm. Founded and runs a nonprofit organization whose aim is to re-think what it means to be an active citizen in the 21st Century. Does community work through his city's Board of Trade, writes books and articles on law and politics, appears regularly as a political commentator on the television channel of his home city.
